Give them Wings, Let them Rise

Udaan

Udaan came into existence in 2006 when a group of 6-7 young energetic boys and girls resigned from a well-known organization in Allahabad and decided to work for marginalized children's right to quality education.

After a simple survey in 2006, Udaan began its journey of working with slum children in Allahabad.

Work began through non-formal education centres in Sadiapur, Gau Ghat and Kareli. The focus had always been on children engaged in rag picking.

A New Journey for Gauri

It was a sunny afternoon back in 2006, when Udaan team first met 6-year-old Gauri (name changed) a rag picker, in Gao Ghat basti on the banks of Yamuna River in Allahabad.

Although Gauri had never been to school before she had a strong desire to learn. She was admitted to the Udaan NFE centre and was prepared to be mainstreamed for 3 months, later she got admitted to the nearby Government primary school.

A new journey had begun for her. She would get up at 4:30 in the morning, finish pheri to collect scrap from the streets, sell it to the nearby scrap dealer and reach school on time. Household chores, supplementary classes at Udaan center in the afternoon and a second-round to collect scrap on days when the family needed extra money.

Today Gauri has completed her graduation from Girls' Degree College Allahabad. She is working under a team of doctors in a nearby private hospital, supporting her family and preparing to join nursing training soon.
